Modi’s visit was part of a series of public meetings in the region aimed at garnering support for his Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of elections due by May.

Despite recent efforts to improve bilateral ties in both countries, disputes over the mountainous Indo-China border – which triggered a war in 1962 – and the region that China claims as southern Tibet have remained a sensitive issue.

MODI SET TO PLACATE SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS AND FARMERS IN THE INTERIM BUDGET

Avijit Nandi Majumdar, Editor-in-Chief: The NDA government will present its last budget before general elections are held in a few months, on February 1. Unlike most other budgets, outgoing governments generally do not  burden their successors into any new spending or taxes. An “interim” budget,  tries to avoid committing spending for the entire financial year.

Financial experts believe that Modi will want to use the budget to win over sections of the Indian electorate that are the most disappointed with his record — small business owners, and farmers. Small business owners have traditionally been the backbone of the BJP, But, Modi’s decision in 2016 to withdraw all of India’s high-value currency notes from circulation overnight hit such businesses hard.

HATE MODI, THANK YOU MAMATAJI FOR BRINGING OPPOSITION UNDER ONE ROOF

Avijit Nandi Majumdar, Editor-in-Chief: From Hardik Patel, to Jignesh Mevani to Hemant Soren to Akhilesh Yadav to Stalin to HD Kuramaswamy to N Chadrababu Naidu to Arvind Kejriwal to Farooq Abdullah, everyone lipped a common refrain. Hate Modi, throw out Modi, and Mamataji thank you for bringing the Opposition regional parties together on one stage.

As the entire Opposition opened their 2019 election innings from TMC rally at Brigade Parade Ground, Mamata Banerjee evolved as catalyst of the unity. Although most of the leaders skirted the issue of who will become the next Prime Minister should the Front come to power but appreciated her efforts to stitch together an opposition forum.

Political pundits believe that Mamata Banerjee has made a good beginning by bringing all together but then whether she is able to gold them on one platform in the long run is the million dollar question.
