HC WITHDRAWS LEGAL PROTECTION FROM RAJEEV: TOP COP FACES CHANCES OF ARREST

BY OUR LEGAL CORRESPONDENT: Former Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar stared at virtual arrest with Kolkata High Court withdrawing the legal protection. CBI claimed that Kumar has not cooperated in investigations and has withheld several key factors which is affecting the probe. Despite several rounds of investigations, CBI sources maintained that they are dissatisfied with his replies and alleged that he is not co-operating with investigations. According to highly placed officials close to CBI director, Rishi Shukla, CBI is toying with the idea of taking Rajeev into custody. According to information available from the CBI, Rajeev Kumar as the then Commissioner of police, Bidhannagar was heading the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Sarada chit fund scam and had destroyed and withheld information, documents and CDs, after the case was handed over to the central agency. The Supreme Court had handed over the chit fund cases to the CBI and is closely monitoring the progress of investigations. CBI indicated that Rajeev Kumar is trying to shield some influential persons. Considered a big set back for the top cop, Kumar’s lawyers said they are studying the order and decide on future course of action at a later stage. They did not rule out going to the Supreme court against the order.
