FEWER TURN OUT FOR SRINAGAR LS SEAT VOTING

Yawar Shafi, Srinagar: For the Srinagar parliamentary seat less Voter turnout with only 15 percent of the electorate exercised their franchise, according to poll officials. A group of displaced Kashmiri migrants held a protest in Jammu after some of the members found their names missing in the voters’ list at a special polling station established for them.

Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency recorded 64.78 per cent polling, with Udhampur district registering the highest of 72.2 per cent till 5pm, poll officials said. In Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency, the highest 21 percent polling was recorded in Shia-dominated Budgam district till 5pm, officials said. Polling time concludes at 6 pm.
In the 2014 election, Srinagar witnessed the lowest voter turnout in the country at 25.86 percent.

ECI OBSERVER DUBEY IN KOLKATA AS BULLETS AND BOMB FLY IN CHOPRA

Avijit Nandi Majumdar, Editor-in-Chief:  Even as rival political parties clashed over bullets and bombs, special police observer appointed by Election Commission of India Vivek Dubey left by morning flight from Siliguri to reach politically cooler climate in Kolkata.  Dubey had gone to Siliguri for the second phase of polls in politically sensitive constituencies of Darjeeling, Raigung and Jalpaiguri but decided to return to Kolkata on the day of the poll. Trinamool Congress and even a section of the Opposition parties alleged that Dubey’s role is suspect. BJP claimed that police observer for Darjeeling was holed up Siliguri till well past noon and left for Chopra much later after series of bombing and firing and clashes had already taken place. Police and district administration officials well versed with election process claimed that neither police Observer nor Dubey has any understanding or experience of conducting elections. Dubey did not even bother to check or clarify the sensitive booths in Chopra nor did he monitor the deployment of central forces in highly sensitive and sensitive areas, claimed senior leaders of BJP and Congress. Incidentally this is the second time in two phases that Dubey has completely failed to discharge his duties.

AHEAD OF SRINAGAR LS POLLS, EVM MACHINES ALLOCATED TO ELECTORAL STAFF

Yawar Shafi, Srinagar: As Srinagar gears up for second phase of Lok Sabha polls scheduled for tomorrow, Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) has been hand out to the concerned polling staff prior to 24 hours of the voting day.

In Srinagar’s SP College these machines were distributed among staff of polls amid tight security measures. The college was guarded by heavily armed security forces.

SECURITY BEEFED UP IN SRINAGAR AHEAD OF LS POLLS

Yawar Shafi, Srinagar: Security has been beefed up across Central Kashmir comprising of Srinagar Budgam and Ganderbal ahead of Lok Sabha elections for Srinagar Parliamentary seat tomorrow.

Centre has already rushed additional companies to the Valley in order to ensure no untoward incident would take place during poll process.

For Srinagar lok sabha seat 12 candidates are in a fray which includes Three times Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah of NC , Khalid Jahangir of BJP, Agha Syed Mohsin of PDP and Irfan Raza Ansari of Peoples Conference.

Yawar Shafi, Srinagar: Central Kashmir which includes Srinagar, Budgam and Ganderbal districts gears up

for Lok Sabha polls for the second phase on 18 April. Deputy Commissioner Srinagar who is also holding the charge of Returning Officer Dr. Shahid Iqbal Chaudhary said that all arrangements have been put in place and for Srinagar all polling booths have been declared as “Hyper Sensitive”. In order not to violate MCC (Model Code of Conduct) flying squads statics surveillance and video close watch teams have been alerted.  Meanwhile in these three districts total 1700 polling stations have been established in which 857 polling stations on 408 locations have been set up in Srinagar. While as 13 lakh voters would cast their vote and 6.50 lakh voters belong to Srinagar alone.

 Meanwhile the candidates in the fray include:

Khan of (Janta Dal United), Abdul Khaliq Bhat of (Shiv Sena), Irfan Raza Ansari of (J&K Peoples Conference), Nazir Ahmad Lone of (Rashtriya Jankranti Party), Nazir Ahmad Sofi of (Manavadikar National Party), Bilal Sultan, Sajjad Ahmad Dar, Abdul Rashid Banday (All independents). The polling will be held on April 18, 2019. The voting hours have been fixed from 7 AM to 6 PM.

SPECIAL SCREENING OF SHORT FILM ‘SEASONED WITH LOVE ‘ WITH STAR CAST

Amarnath, Mumbai: Short Film, ‘Seasoned With Love’ directed by Lakshmi Iyer was screened at Mumbai where the star cast and their close friends were present. Actors Sudhanshu Pandey, Flora Saini, Richa Sony and Lakshmi R. Iyer attended the event and interacted with the media. The cast was excited about discussing details of their character roles and the shooting process.

Actors Sushant Singh and Sameer Soni were also present during the screening and congratulated the director for her success. Lakshmi Iyer told the media that she is slated to release more short web series’ and will be officially announcing the same soon.

VILLAGERS FOUGHT PITCHED BATTLE WITH POLICE: COPS INJURED, VEHICLES DAMAGED

By a staff reporter: Violence broke out in East Midnapur after villagers attacked the police and fought a pitched battle after the cops raided the area in search of criminals wanted for various incidents of crime. Five police vehicles were badly damaged and three policemen suffered injuries. Local villagers alleged that East Midnapur police carried out partisan raid to arrest activists owing allegiance Opposition parties. Inspector General of police western range Rajeev Mishra told ANM News that police were conducting raids to arrest FIR named anti socials wanted in several incidents of crime. When they reached the village under Moyna police station based on specific information, the villagers attacked the cops. A fierce fight ensured in which police vehicles were badly damaged. The officer-in-charge of Moyna police station was also injured in the incident. Police reinforcement reached the area and tension prevails at the spot.

MILITANTS ATTACK RESIDENCE OF NATIONAL CONFERENCE LEADER

Yawar Shafi, Srinagar: Militants attacked the residence of National Conference leader Ashraf Bhat by firing UBGL Grenade at Tral. This incident occurred when National Conference Anantnag Parliamentary candidate Hasnain Masoodi was addressing workers when a grenade exploded outside his residence. No loss or damage has been reported.

I CHALLENGE PM MODI TO ADDRESS RALLY IN KASHMIR: NC CHIEF

Yawar Shafi, Srinagar: Three times Chief Minister of Jammu Kashmir and Chief of National Conference Dr. Farooq Abdullah challenged Prime Minister Modi to address a rally in Kashmir Valley if he (PM) believes Kashmir is an integral part of India.

“If you believe Kashmir is an integral part of India then why don’t you address rally here.” Farooq said during a party workers convention at SK Park in Srinagar.

He also dubbed Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “anti-Kashmiri and anti-Muslim”.

“Had National Conference tried to divide the nation, then India would not have existed today,” said Abdullah in response to Modi’s jibe at “Abdullah’s and Mufti’s” for ruining the state at a rally in Jammu a day ago.

GEELANI’S ELDER SON SUMMONED BY NIA FOR SECOND TIME

Yawar Shafi, Srinagar: Senior Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s elder son Dr Naeem Geelani received second summon from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) asking him to attend the agency’s Delhi headquarters for questioning in a funding case.

This is the second time in about a week that Dr Naeem has been summoned by the NIA to Delhi.  He has been asked to appear before NIA on April 22, 2019, at 10.30 and summon has been issued by SP, headquarters, Delhi. This has a reference of Case no NIA crime no RC- 10/2017/NIA/DLI. In his first summon he was asked to appear on April 9, 2019, at NIA Delhi.
